The University of Georgia is situated in Athens, Georgia. The Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources has about 60 faculty members, and about 200 undergraduate (third and fourth year) and 200 graduate students (MS, MFR, PhD). The faculty regularly teach, engage in outreach, and conduct research in the areas of forestry, wildlife, hydrology, soils, fisheries, recreation, sustainability, and geographic information systems.
The University of Tennessee is situated in Knoxville, Tennessee. The School of Natural Resources is located within the UT Institute of Agriculture. The 32 faculty members within the School are integrated among disciplines and assigned different responsibilities for the teaching, research and extension functions. More than 50 graduate students (MS and PhD) presently are seeking advanced degrees in the School.
The office of the Southern Regional Extension Forester (SREF) has been located on the campus of the University of Georgia since 1979. This office houses staff that support regional and national technology transfer, Extension, professional development and science delivery to a variety of audiences. The SREF office is supported by the 13 Southern 1862 Land Grant Universities, the USDA Forest Service Southern Region and several ongoing grants. In addition, the SREF office works closely with the 1890 Land Grant Universities, the southern state forestry agencies and associations, and several public and private environmental and natural resources agencies.
